Life and Childhood of Clara Barton

Many of us cherish dreams in our hearts to do something in life which would mark an epoch in history. However, our inner fears and apprehensions do not let us come out of the shell we tend to form around us. If we unravel the rolls of history, we will be surprised to note how some of the great personalities of the world who possessed the same weaknesses that we harbor, overcame their shortcomings and performed such incredible works for which people remember them even after their deaths... One such personality is that of Clara Barton who is famous for establishing the American Red Cross.

Clara Barton was extremely shy when she was a child. She hardly made any friends. This was perhaps because she had could not pronounce the letter’s’ while speaking. Her family was worried for her and did not know how to make her overcome her fears. Then something happened that changed Clara completely.

Clara was fond of her brother, David. He got injured badly. The doctor advised the use of leeches which would suck the bad blood out of his body. Surprisingly, Clara declared that she would look after her brother. This developed her confidence and trust in herself. She even started taking interest in the job of nursing so much so that she went to the battlefields of the American Civil War to attend the wounded soldiers. Gradually, she gained fame in her country for her services and finally she established a new American Red Cross which even to this day gives relief to millions of different victims.

Thus, the heroic struggle of Clara Barton's life shows that if there is nothing impossible in this world. Once you become determined to do something you can definitely become the masters of your destiny.
