Every day, the environment is becoming increasingly hazardous. The ecosystem of the planet is facing numerous threats that don’t seem to be decreasing. Perhaps the most pressing environmental crises that are faced today are with regards to nukes and oil spills.
Nuclear warfare has become a major point of concern for nations around the world ever since the first nuclear bomb was drop at the closing of World War II. While each country strives to establish its dominance by increasing their stock of nuclear arsenal, they hardly take into account the detrimental effects that these nuclear warheads have on the environment. When used, they completely devastate their immediate area of effect, and even when left idle, they can be potentially lethal due to radioactive bleeding. Moreover, the nuclear waste that is obtained when attempting to disarm them is equal, if not more, to the harm it causes when detonated.
Oil spills occur when a substantial amount of oil, refined or otherwise, is released into the ocean or coastal waters. Oil spills affect marine wildlife both above and below the surface. Birds, sea otters, seals, fish and even plankton are all afflicted, with conditions such as hypothermia, body temperature fluctuations, limited photosynthesis, dehydration and metabolic imbalances. We need to clean up oil spills or we are risking the loss of clean water and aquatic life.
